Day 1: 23rd January 2020
Working Session 1: Decoding the Moot Proposition
At the Morning of 23.01.2020, the session was conducted by Mr. Anant having worked at Sharda Amarchand Mangaldas and Mr. Rachnendra practising litigation, for enhancing the mooting capability of the students. Soon after the Inaugural session, the first Working session on “Decoding the moot proposition” began. First, they discussed about the extracting the material facts where we were told to read the moot problem, mark new words along with name of statutes and new concepts. Then we were told to analyse the applicable statutes in moot proposition which helped us to identify the law applicable in moot proposition.
Working Session 2: Examining sections of memorials
The session started primarily with examining the sections of memorials i.e. which sections are applicable to the moot proposition. Then we discussed about framing the issues and sub issues where we were guided to identify the material and immaterial facts. Lastly, they guided us as how to prepare the statement of jurisdiction where they gave us the MANTRA (Formula) i.e. ILAC (Issues Law Argument Conclusion)
Working Session 3: Preparing the Memorial Structure
This session started by them giving an overview of preparing the memorial structure where we were told that “Research is the most important part of any moot preparation. Research never ends, not even on the day of the moot. However, the formatting of your memorial is also very important, and many people tend to forget that which is why their memorial score is the reason for low team ranks”.
Working Session 4: Discussion on 3rd Seth Jagan Nath Bajaj National Moot Competition-We discussed about the moot proposition which our university is organizing, we got to know about the basics of drafting, specific word usage, hierarchy of authorities etc. It was very helpful to us as it made our work easier and which could save a lot of time while preparing a proposition as they’ve told us various shortcuts along with couple of strategies which would make our moot proposition presentable.
Day 2: 24th January 2020
Working session 1: Preparing the Memorial Structure 1st session of day 2 started with understanding the basic formatting tools for memorial making for e.g. Appropriate heading, fonts, header/ footer, alignment, line and paragraph spacing, border, margins etc. Further we were guided as how to prepare complete memorial outline as earlier, we were unaware of these things, therefore, it helped us a lot in preparing memorials. We were guided as how to use MS word shortcuts for e.g. (Enter+ Ctrl+ Enter) for adding new page etc.
Working session 2: Drafting and finalizing the memorials The session started with learning the basics of memorial drafting where they guided us about the drafting styles and strategies, specific word usage, consistent drafting, capitalization, using of ILAC, etc. Then they discussed the IRAC method of drafting and they told us that IRAC is used after your facts section, in the discussion section or your memo, or the argument section of your brief.
Working session 3: Checks and touch ups This session started with discussing about drafting prayer and arguments synopsis, where they guided us about how the prayer must be short and precise which shall consist of all the relaxations which the party wants from the Hon’ble Court. Then they guided us through the final formatting checks and touch ups i.e. How to correct the citations, how to highlight your headings. Further, he guided us about how to generate the index and table of authorities with the use of MS word.
Working session 4: Bonus Tips In this session they’ve discussed about how to set the timeline for a moot i.e. within the prescribed time period within the guidelines. Then they guided us about how to manage the memorials within the page limits, they told us that how not to exaggerate things and how to write point-to-point. Further, they taught us how to make one’s memorial appealing i.e. using of proper lines and spacings and how to decorate your memorial if needed. At last they solved our queries regarding the training program.
